John & Yoko Plastic Ono Band – Power To The People

Domani, 10 ottobre, esce Power To The People (Super Deluxe Edition), un cofanetto monumentale di 12 dischi che celebra l’attivismo politico di John Lennon e Yoko Ono, la loro lotta per la pace, le proteste non violente e gli anni trascorsi a New York City, durante un periodo decisivo nella loro vita artistica e personale (ne abbiamo parlato anche qui nella nostra rubrica Music Is Love).
Il progetto, pubblicato da Universal Music, arriva il giorno dopo l’85° compleanno di John e porta la firma del figlio Sean Ono Lennon, che lo ha compilato, mixato e curato con il suo team vincitore di 5 Grammy Awards, tra cui quello per Mind Games – The Ultimate Collection (Super Deluxe Edition), premiato nel 2025 come Best Boxed Set Or Special Limited Edition Package.
Il box include 123 tracce, tra cui 92 bonus track, 90 brani inediti e nuove versioni remixate, a partire dagli One To One Concerts – gli unici concerti completi di Lennon dopo i Beatles – completamente remixati per la prima volta.

UN VIAGGIO NEL CUORE DELL’ERA PIÙ POLITICA DI JOHN E YOKO
Dall’inno pacifista Give Peace A Chance alla nuova versione dell’album del 1972 Sometime In New York City, fino alle esibizioni storiche del Madison Square Garden, il cofanetto ripercorre un’epoca cruciale in cui la coppia si immerse nell’attivismo politico, tra manifestazioni, arte d’avanguardia e provocazioni sociali.

Al centro del box troviamo gli One To One Concerts, pomeridiano e serale, riuniti per la prima volta in un’unica edizione.
I concerti del 30 agosto 1972 al Madison Square Garden raccolsero oltre 1,5 milioni di dollari (circa 11,5 milioni odierni) per i bambini con disabilità intellettive.
Rimasterizzazione dai nastri originali a cura di Paul Hicks e Sam Gannon, mixati in HD Stereo, 5.1 Surround e Dolby Atmos da Alex Wharton agli Abbey Road Studios.

Estratti nel documentario One To One: John & Yoko, diretto da Kevin Macdonald e Sam Rice-Edwards, in uscita su HBO Max in autunno.

JOHN & YOKO IN NEW YORK CITY
Nel 1971, John & Yoko si trasferiscono a New York, stabilendosi al 105 Bank Street, immersi nella cultura progressista del Greenwich Village.
L’attivismo della coppia attirò l’attenzione dell’amministrazione Nixon e l’FBI li mise sotto sorveglianza.
Yoko affrontava anche la battaglia per la figlia Kyoko, sottratta dall’ex marito Anthony Cox.
In mezzo a queste lotte, continuarono a creare arte e musica.
Sometime In New York City è un giornale sonoro su temi come:

• ingiustizia razziale

• rivolte della prigione di Attica

• gli attivisti per i diritti civili come Angela Davis

• femminismo

IL MADISON SQUARE GARDEN E IL CASO WILLOWBROOK
Il 30 agosto 1972, due concerti beneficenza al Madison Square Garden raccolsero fondi per i bambini della Willowbrook State School, denunciata da Geraldo Rivera.
I concerti includono brani da:

• tutti gli album solisti di John e Yoko

• Sometime In New York City

• Imagine, Give Peace A Chance

• un brano dei Beatles

• Stevie Wonder

Furono gli ultimi concerti di Lennon.

La pressione su John Lennon aumentò nel 1972, con la posizione legale negli Stati Uniti sempre più precaria.
Con l’aiuto dell’avvocato Leon Wildes, la situazione si sbloccò nel 1975, mentre Watergate travolgeva Nixon.
Nel 1976, a John fu concessa la residenza permanente negli Stati Uniti.

Gli anni Settanta furono per John & Yoko un periodo di:

• attivismo politico acceso

• battaglie legali estenuanti

• dolore personale profondo

Eppure, rimasero uniti, sfidando lo status quo, esprimendosi senza filtri e, soprattutto, immaginando un mondo migliore.

Power To The People (Super Deluxe Edition) racconta e celebra con profondità questo snodo fondamentale nella vita artistica e privata di John e Yoko.
